A Villanelle for Milesent Vibert

Alan Fairfax

Today you will not sit upon the throne
But though your champion is slain
You may claim a greater honor as your own
Your dreams of glory have flown
And now you hear the sad refrain
Today you will not sit upon the throne
Yet by your example we are shown
That defeat, even more than victory, may be gain
You may claim a greater honor as your own
So quickly was he overthrown
That his opponent suffered little strain
Today you will not sit upon the throne
So now you have what no queen has known
A lord who faced certain death and pain
You may claim a greater honor as your own
My lady, may your glory never wane
Let not your lord's defeat seem as a stain
Today you will not sit upon the throne
You may claim a greater honor as your own
