Prarie Lament ---words and music copyright (C) 1984 by Ernest Clark <<5/28/85 revision>> C G G7 C I see the sunset burning far, far away, Am G C Past cornfields glowing in its blaze. G G7 C My studies are progressing and I guess I can't complain, F G Even though my goals seem hidden in the haze. F G G7 C The colors are amazing as the sun de-scends F G To kiss the prairie's waiting hand, F G G7 C In a ring where crimson shades toward solemn blue F G On the rim of my adopted land. C F C G G7 C Am C But gee, I miss the mountains of my home. You never saw horizon--there were only the hills, Looking down on my home far below, Lots of sisters and brothers, only room left for love, Didn't need nothing that we didn't know. But the schoolhouse made me hunger for the world outside, Braduation was like getting out of jail! Yet I cried as I parted from my every friend, Who stayed within the walls I had to scale, And gee, I miss the mountains of my home. So now I watch the prairie, white and black, green and tan, As the seasons march their path across the years. New friends, new pastimes come enclose all my time, Stratagems and lies, plans and fears. But now I see their limits--or maybe, just my own. The game has lost its point, and I'll not play! The hills could hide the sunsets, but never peoples' souls, I know I'm going back there to stay. 'Cause, gee, I miss the mountains of my home.
