Starset

Miura Suzume-dono

Beyond the mountains’ majesty, beyond the sun-drenched plain,
Beyond the purple foothills and the seas of golden grain,
Away above the desert, overlooking distant shores,
Once, long ago, there shone a star that now will shine no more.

Her voice sang out across the world with clarity and grace.
Her missive rang through every castle, field, and marketplace:
“Take arms, take arts, take all your strength, and all the skills of yore -
Come find me, and come share your light until we shine no more!”

She danced above the gilded sands, her arms spread wide to all,
And far across the land, unnumbered masses heard her call.
They feasted, fought, and traveled long to fight her noble war,
And they joined her in her glory ‘til they all could shine no more.

Still, every star that hangs aloft must someday set in turn,
And her loss is mourned by countless kin, who for her song still yearn.
But if you’d keep her kindled, swear the oath that I once swore:
Keep her fire alight within your heart until you shine no more.

For when I was a babe in arms, that star, she sang to me -
She whispered dreams of honor, glory, hope, and chivalry.
She told me then: As long as love still lives among her score,
Her light would still shine on through us until we shine no more.

Her joy still stands a beacon, burning bright in all our hearts,
For she’s made us shards of starlight, blazing brilliant in the dark.
So though she has now set, her voice still has the chance to soar
If we, who loved her so, still shine until we shine no more.

Let her echo in your memory! Let her blaze within your soul,
For we all are still the pieces that, together, made her whole!
And, together, we shine brighter than, alone, she could before -
So, together, let’s ensure her light shines on forevermore!

Gwenhevare Holleran
Barony March of Mons Tonitrus, Kingdom of Atenveldt

whose first overnight SCA event as a child was the now-defunct Estrella War,

and who would to dedicate this poem, not just to it,
but to all the stars that have set in their own time,
with no regard for the time we wished they’d have.

Penned this 2nd day of August, AS 56, being the year 2021 of the Gregorian calendar.
