Aethelmark Skies (filk of American Pie)

Original tune American Pie, by Don McLean)

A long long time ago
In this Modern Middle Age
How those campfires made me smile
I turned the car to join the line
My medallion was my sign
That I could be at home for a while
The drive was long and hard, they said
You get there slow, and feel half dead
The backroad route is longest
The Utah route is wrongest
You’ve made it through the slowest ride
You’ve reached Valhalla, but never died
You’ve made it home, now come inside
This day the dragons fly

Well my, my, these Aethelmark skies
Massive showers in an hour but for now we are dry
We’ve come back home, and raised our banners on high
Singing this will be the day dragons fly
This will be the day dragons fly

Did you know our Pennsic War
Isn’t what it used to be before?
It used to be just a hundred souls
Now do you believe in our silly Dream?
Can fantasies be what they seem?
Or is this all just for Renn-Faire show?

Well I know we all play different games
I’ve seen personas I couldn’t name
In Pennsic weather it’s true
We all dig those light linen trews
We’re all misfit nerdy historical nuts
Gathered here in our painted huts
I guess we’re all harmless enough
On nights when dragons fly

I started singin’
My, my, these Aethelmark skies
Massive showers in an hour but for now we are dry
We’ve come back home, and raised our banners on high
Singing this will be the day dragons fly
This will be the day dragons fly

Now for fifty years and counting still
We’ve gathered on this grassy hill
And we’ll be here for many more
When the kingdoms multiplied in time
We got more reason, but kept the rhyme
And gather still to go to war
Oh, and while the BOD was looking around
To find more reasons to stop and frown
The Dream just kept on growing
The folks kept rocking and rolling
Now kings and queens dine in their halls
The forest echoes with Tuchux calls
The party starts when darkness falls
The nights when dragons fly

We were singin’
My, my, these Aethelmark skies
Maybe showers in an hour but for now we are dry
We’ve come back home, and raised our banners on high
Singing this will be the day dragons fly
This will be the day dragons fly

We pack our tents and load our carts
with sunburned skin and heavy hearts
I was feeling pretty blue
We all played in that epic game
And told some stories, earned some fame
We even said some that were mostly true

And in the end, some points were won,
Some classes taught, a marathon run
A lot of night we stayed up
A lot of tales we made up
And the Mayor I admired most
Parties with Valhalla’s golden hosts
Since we’re all here, let’s raise a toast
To the place where dragons fly

And I was singin’
Well my, my, these Aethelmark skies
Maybe showers in an hour but for now we are dry
We’ve come back home, and raised our banners on high
Singing this will be the day dragons fly
This will be the day dragons fly

We were singing
Well my, my, these Aethelmark skies
Maybe showers in an hour but for now we are dry
We’ve come back home, and raised our banners on high
Singing this will be the day dragons fly
