Lancelot's Lament

Ríoghnach Locha Eachach

Down, down
The cold river flows
Innocence iced in her veins
The wind, it does howl
But the story lives on
And I, I stay by her side
As the light slowly dies from her eyes

Not so long ago
We did meet by the shore
Into my arms did she fall
From the boat that did carry
Her hopes and her dreams
It creaks, now drifting alone
Carries only the wind to her home

Silently I
Wipe the tear from her cheek
Her hand, so cold now in mine
Her name, it is carved
With a lover's soft care
But never released from her lips
How could it have come so to this?

Return now I
To my horse on the bank
Travelers all stop and stare
They wonder at the beauty
Of the maiden so cold
A cruelty to have left her there
For no family hath she to despair

Oh, pity the knight
Who wept all the night through
For a lady he'd only just seen
A candle I hold
For her soul now beyond
And regret so deep in my heart
For the curse that did rip us apart
