Hanged by Dawn

Ríoghnach Locha Eachach

The painted locket 'round my neck
Will soon have company
The heart upon its fragile face
Will break 'fore e'er it beats
My life was lonely long before
But though it be again
The loneliness will not last long
For soon I'll greet a friend

I'm hapless but not helpless
You'll see that soon enough
For when I meet that man in black
I will be standing up
I'll be with you soon, my dear
To watch the rising sun
My necklace will have company
For I'll be hanged by dawn
For I'll be hanged by dawn

There'll be no pearly gates for us
No angels singing loud
Our love did burn with passion so
It shall not be put out
I will meet you soon, my love
And in our warm embrace
You will forget the other one
Who you let kiss your face

I'm hapless but not helpless
You'll see that soon enough
For when I meet that man in black
I will be standing up
I'll be with you soon, my dear
To watch the rising sun
My necklace will have company
For I'll be hanged by dawn
For I'll be hanged by dawn

The locket that you gave to me
Looks lovely 'gainst the rope
But what a shame that the old chain
Is still around her throat
I'm sure she likes those pearly gates
But I just don't wear pearls
A locket's all I'll ever need
For in it's my whole world

I'm hapless but not helpless
You saw that well enough
And when I meet that man in black
I will be standing up
I'll be with you soon, my dear
To watch the rising sun
My necklace now has company
And I await the dawn
And I await the dawn
