Let Your Retainers Retain

Caneus of Illiton

Majesties, highnesses, excellencies
A moment of your treasured time if you please,
Your valuable work leaves no discrepancies
But hear a retainer’s refrain
We know you’ve spent most of your healthy careers
Doing things for yourselves and not sitting on rears
But please, for our own sakes, will you just be dears
And let your retainers retain.

Let your retainers retain
Rely on your well-vetted thanes
Attend to the kingdom, sit down on your thing some
And let your retainers retain

We know that you might feel like some kind of jerk
Sitting ‘round while you let someone else do the work
But it’s what we signed up for, so back here I’ll lurk
Til you give me a task to maintain

Bring us an arduously Aegean job
Or point to the feast hall and hand us a mop
Anything’s better than feeling a slob
Can’t you see your retainer’s in pain?

Trust me, I get it, my lady, my lord
You got here through prowess with art or with sword
But throw me a bone here, I’m desperately bored
I think I’m going out of my brain

Let your retainers retain
Rely on your well-vetted thanes
Self-reliant and steadfast,
I’m losing my head fast
Please let your retainers retain?
