Fixing the King

History of the Knowne Worlde in Song and Story:
A special challenge from Sir Fern

Which songs, stories, tales and legends of the SCA are well-known in many different kingdoms? What are the stories and songs that transcend all of the Laurel Kingdoms to create our shared bardic heritage? Countess Sir Fern de la Foret is searching for the most widespread and popular examples of bardic arts to collect for presentation at the SCA 50-year Celebration in 2016. Performances, texts, and recommendations are welcome! This is a difficult challenge, because the goal is to find the universal themes covering all 50 years, rather than each kingdom's favorites. (The bardic history of each kingdom is also important, of course, and it will be a separate topic.)

Herald Song by Damien Nitehauk
Recorded at Spring Crown 2013

Sadly, the hallway we were recording in had an extreme amount of background noise. This made getting
a clean recording very difficult. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a cleaner version of this at some
point.

The Mermaid
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2014 in Ravenslake

Period Piece
Perform a documentably period piece of music, verse, story, or song. Dig out those reference books,
blow off the dust (try not to sneeze), and see what wonderful and magical treasures you can find in
them. There is a staggering amount of fantastic material out there. Find something, be it silly or
sublime, and amaze us with it.

The Mid Realm Toll Road
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2014 in Ravenslake

The Magic Token (or The Horrible Bargain)
In a fabled land to the east it is said that those who have been given a glimpse of A Certain
Laurel's "magic token" are themselves destined to be elevated to the order of the Laurel. Is this a
case of "you get to be a Laurel, but you have to look at A Certain Laurel's Magic Token", or "you
*have* to become a Laurel, but at least you get to see A Certain Laurel's Magic Token"? Tell us of
such a dire covenant.

Pennsic Bridges
From John Barlycorn to Caseg Fedi: Pennsic Bridges - Damian Nihthauk
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2022 in the Shire of the Ravenslake.

lyrics: Damian Nihthauk
music: London Bridge (Trad)

From John Barlycorn to Caseg Fedi:
At Harvest there is hope the seeds planted at the start of spring have provided bountiful crops to see one's village through the winter. That plenty of hands will make light work. A completion of tasks and quests through toils, and reaping such rewards- which depending the seeds sown, could have quite the turnabout!
There are a cornucopia of legends and traditions to celebrate and bring in the harvest!

Perform a work celebrating or sharing about Harvest, completion of a quest, roads traveled (pot holes and all), or -- like the Caseg Fedi (the "September Mare") - passing down knowledge from the fall to teach the new seeds to grow.

Post-Revel Midrealm Bardic Madness 2017
We had a limited amount of time for the Post-Revel/Bardic Circle after Mid-Realm Bardic Madness XIX:
Bardic By the Numbers - Primus to Extremus, 18 November 2017, and so everyone was asked to just
pick, pass, or play without introduction or explanation. I decided it would be more fun to edit it
all together as one piece so everyone could get the feel of what it was like. Other than a few
technical difficulties, here is most all of what went on for the last two hours of the event. Enjoy!

Together
Damian Nihthauk (Midrealm) sings an original piece he wrote when he was new to the SCA (and rewrote
that day to match his memory) in honour of his lady-wife (they've just celebrated their 25th
anniversary). Recorded at Mid-Realm Bardic Madness XIX: Bardic By the Numbers - Primus to
Extremus‎, 18 November 2017.

There’s a First Time for Everything:
Everything was new once. No matter what we’re doing, there was an initial stab at it. Tell us in
song, story, or poem about such a beginning.
