Arwyn of Leicester (Borealis Avacal)
I'm Arwyn of Leicester sometimes known as Amira al-'Aliyya and I currently live in the kingdom of
Avacal. I have been in the SCA since 1991 and helped out many member's wedding feasts initially. I started doing food recipe redaction back then and loved cooking over the fire (a skill I had before I joined the SCA). I spent a lot of time doing other things (heraldry, heavy fighting, officer positions) but always turned back to my love of food. In 2012, I started doing recipe ingredient analysis of spices and why they were used (microbiological inhibition for food pathogens, economics, etc). Most of all, I loved dispelling the myth that people used spices to cover up rotten meat! I then expanded into the protein use, bone artifacts and used new research from carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis which further dispels some myths about what poorer classes ate for protein but also what people did on fast days. As you can see, I love combining my real world chemical engineering experience in the food industry, new and exciting scientific research and recipe and ingredient analysis. It's the basis of the gastronomy trend in restaurants today and we can use it to unlock our medieval palate. In December 2019, TRM Ivarr and Asney elevated me to the laurel for it. Biatrichi Malatesta Canzionari di Palermo (Loch Soilleir Ansteorra)
I am Magnifica Bia, musician, poet, percussionist, laurel, and former Kingdom Bard of Ansteorra. I am the widow of Luciano
Malatesta who was lost at sea (which is not as expensive to arrange as one expects). I am living between Venice, Sicily and Ansteorra, performing and trading olive oil and influence in the year 1470. Mundanely, I have been performing since the age of three, singing in numerous choirs and playing the bass guitar.. I studied under Buck Ross of the University of Houston Moore’s Opera Company, Charles Hausmann of the Houston Symphony Chorus, Jason Oby Chair of the Texas Southern University School of Music, and Dean Dalton, Classical Music Director for KUHF. I specialize in the music of the Mediterranean rim, and play just about every plucked instrument you can think of. I can usually be found at events, playing at the foot of the Ansteorran Court. Caterina da Savona (An Tir)
I first joined the SCA in 2019, so most of my
interactions so far have been virtual. My persona is late 14th century northern Italian with some French influence. My main interest is sewing and historical fashions, but we also do a lot of home brewing, gardening, and cooking. I'm now trying to learn a little bit about music as an adult! I recently got my first instrument, a plucked psaltery, and I'm trying to sort this thing out.... |
Cedric Fithelere (Ansteorra)
Cedric Fithelere, OL, was the Twelfth Premier Bard of Ansteorra as well as a Lion of Ansteorra.
He plays music professionally and is half of a moderately famous duo called the Bedlam Bards. In his day job, he teaches hypnotic storytelling and employs that tool to help people overcome all manner of hang-ups, including stage fright. |
Cerian Cantwr (Tree-Girt-Sea Mid-Realm)
I am the Autocrat for Known World Cooks & Bards (for my sins, which clearly must be many). If you've got any bardic related questions about the event, send them my way. Cerian Cantwr is a bard in the mid-15th century. He can be found wandering the land entertaining the populace with song, story, and poem. In the SCA, he does much the same and has spent 7 years as seneschal of Tree-Girt-Sea in expiation of his sins. During his spare (hah) time, he maintains far too many SCA web sites and has been drafted back from retirement as the co-provost for Mid-Realm Bardic Madness. He is squired to Sir Galem Lionel Ostwestly and Duke Comar gyr Mirand. Charles Grab is an independent computer consultant in the early 21st century. He can be found wandering the land building databases, applications, and system designs. Cerian can be heard on some of John Inchingham's CDs - available either from him or at the merchant booths of Celtic Sun or John ap Wynne. I currently have four apprentices, one foster apprentice, one ex-apprentice, and one ward: THL Beatrice de Winter [Rhydderich Hael, Æthelmearc] THL Juliane Bechaumpe [Cleftlands] THL Llwelyn Glyndwr (aka Llwelyn Glyndyverdwy) [Cleftlands] THL Hilla Stormbringer (aka Hilla Hammasdoghter) [Ravenslake] THL Siobhán an Einigh of Connacht (fosterling) [Grey Gargoyles] Lady Orsina della Luna [Carolingia, East] Mistress Lucia Elena Braganza (ex-apprentice and OL) [Sternfeld] Visit my home page. |

Dietrich von Sachsen (Ramshaven Ealdormere)
Born in the Year of Our Lord 1223, Dietrich von Sachsen is the third son of a minor nobleman from Laußig, north-east of Leipzig. Realizing that the odds of inheriting enough of his father’s estate to support himself were slim at best, Dietrich set north to Prussia to serve as a “guest crusader” with the Teutonic Order in Prussia - though he was badly injured during the Order's disastrous defeat at the Osa river.
The Honourable Lord Dietrich von Sachsen is presently the Kingdom Bard of Ealdormere, serving under King Rattanicus and Queen Isabel. He is a singer, poet, wordsmith, herald, fighter, coinmaker, and more besides. |

the turn of 4th and 5th century CE. She manages the household for her husbands and serves in the inner quarters of the imperial palace. She is quite skilled in materia medica which includes preparation of fragrances and cosmetics. |
Éadaoin Ruadh (Rhyderich Hael Æthelmearc)
Game-wise, Éadaoin grew up fighting,
shooting, and punning in the Dragon Lands under Patrick von Brandenburg's guidance. Life made her mundane person move to Æthelmearc, where she quickly fell back in with old friends from Dagorhir who cross game into SCA, and began the ill fated career of making people cry and groan at her music and poetry. She earned the Hael's Baronial Bard recognition, along with Æthelmearc's Seven Pearls Bardic Champion, and later the kingdom's Sylvan Bard sash as their Plague Bard, though she attributes it all to a lucky young goat sacrifice--no kidding! Éadaoin continues filking, exploring, songwriting, and making merry, NA cider, books, and wood projects across (and outside of) the known world. Irish and other Celtic inspirations, putting a spin on societal norms, nature, and strong female figures are her favorite topics. She currently manages the Æthelbards' website, minions for several camps and merchants at Pennsic, and attends circles as she can. Chances are you'll find her at the bardic fire at any given rising of the moon. Visit my home page. |

Emelote of Calais (Skraeling Althing Ealdormere)
The Honourable Lady Emelote of Calais (pronounced: Ehm-eh-loh) was born in Calais, France in
1494. She is the only child from her parents. Her Father was a Merchant of the Staple of Calais and was influential in the wool trade in Calais. Being the only child, her Father thought it wise to educate her in the wool business so that she may ensure the family legacy, no matter the man she married. Her family spent time between Calais and their wool estates in the Chichester area of England. Emelote was first introduced to the SCA from a TV Program called Adrienne Clarkson Presents in which the presenter followed the King and Queen of Ealdormere to Pennsic (1998). At the time she had no idea what the SCA was and searched on what little was available online. She found the Canton of Caldrithig (Ottawa, Canada) and attended her first feast in 1999 and recalls the food was amazing. It wouldn't be until a chance meeting at a party in 2007 that would forever change her. That meeting had her fall into the realm of historical cooking and never looking back! I enjoy serving the crown as entourage when I'm not in the kitchen. I love anything to do with the fibre arts and have a passion in doing illuminated images. My motto is: Mei modi ridiculum (My kind of ridiculous) and I am all about the rabbit hole. I enjoy showing the interested public what we do in the SCA and meeting new people! Visit my home page. |

Hilla Stormbringer (Ravenslake Mid-Realm)
I am the Grand Vizier (advisor) for Known World Cooks & Bards.
Persona: Hilla is the eldest child and only daughter of Hama Ealdorman and his wife Leofrun. Though she is a capable enough cook and aid in household duties, and though she can darn a sock like no one's business, her true skill is as a scop. She loves to sing and craft songs and tales, and tell old legends in the feasting hall. Storms follow her wherever she goes. SCA: Hilla can be seen (or at least heard) at events, singing, singing, singing, causing mischief and mayhem, and random telling of stories. Her other activities include occasional illumination, missing archery targets, and attempting to not bleed on embroidery. She is apprenticed to Master Cerian Cantwr, and accordingly, finally learned how to spell 'Cantwr'. Contrary to popular belief, Hilla cannot control the weather. (Disclaimer: Hilla cannot independently confirm the veracity of the last statement.) Hilla is the current Bard of the Midlands. |

Lady Meadhbh Rois Ineagh Ui Chaoimh (Drachenwald)
My name of which I have a number, I known as Meadhbh Rois Ineagh Ui Chaoimh, or Meadhbh of the nine cauldrons or the
fire Lady or Queen of the breakfasts, you choose. My one true love in the SCA is anything Irish. I live in Tipperary and will cook you a meal, a feast, a tidbit based on the Irish ages. There are no written manuscripts , but there are story, and myths which gives us an inside to what people ate , I prove that certain ingredients were available in the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, in Viking times, In Anglo Norman times etc.. Then I cook, corresponding type foods. Alas I am not a bread maker but a biscuit maker, and having taken the Golden Rose challenge in baking nine different biscuits. As I said before I have Keen interest in basically Irish stuff and can sometimes can find that piece of information you need to start a project, prove a point or just answer a question that you don’t know about where to start. I look at whole picture rather than one bit and yes go down many rabbit holes which in turn joins together to make a Warren or the bigger picture, who people were, their influence, where they lived and they died etc. I have cooked many breakfasts, lunches and feast. My food is now based on my own research, My main goal when cooking is taking my budget and making it go as far as I can. I have substantial pot herb garden, I will beg and borrow and forage to make my food authentic, I will finish with my favourite herb is wild garlic, I cook simply and my dishes usually only have 5-6 ingredients letting good food do the rest. I am currently Seneschal of the Barony of Eplaheimr, I joined the SCA with two young boys who have are men now my life changed the day I found SCA. Visit my home page. |

As her father's business kept him away, it was thought best for Sciath, her sister (Suannoch), and her mother (Jonet) if they moved to Srath Chluaidh, and closer to the security of the family. Once established in Bute, Sciath was taught to run a noble household. Her father's stories of his travels made her dream of the wide world, and her father arranged for her marriage to Lord Iieuan ap Gwilym, a Welshman of noble birth. She moved to Caerleon, in Gwent. This was a far distance from home, and the language was ne'er the same. Life has been an adventure ever since. Magistra Sciath ingen Chaennaig lives as the territorial Baroness in the Barony of Rising Waters but enjoys travelling the Known World to discover new people, and teaching research practices, metalwork, heraldry and music theory. I rather dislike writing bios about myself, but the event stewards insisted that I submit a profile. I first learned of the Society around AS
IV and managed to join the Society in AS XI. I almost made it to 40 years in the Society without a peerage. While I intended to pursue Scandinavian studies, I failed to find the promised Old Norse textbook at the Harvard CO-OP. Instead, I found a book called "Learn Japanese in Thirty Hours". The title LIES. I have developed a number of Japan centric interests. I wrote a “pamphlet" about premodern Japanese names and am attempting to write a “leaflet” about premodern Japanese gastronomy. I also hope to write introductions to: Japanese Poetry & Poetics and Kyōgen (premodern Japanese comic theatre). Within the Society, I am a heraldic groupie and general “gadfly”. Visit my home page. |

Urtatim al-Qurtubiyya bint 'abd al-Karim al-hakam al-Fasi (West)
Urtatim (oor-tah-TEEM!) was born and raised in the Maghribi city of Fas (known as Fez to the Franj) where her father teaches at the University of Qayrawan, the world's oldest, continuously operating university. She makes her home in 10th century al-Andalus, in the capital city of Qurṭuba (known as Córdoba to the Franj) during the reign of the glorious Caliph 'abd al-Rahman III. She is fortunate that at this time in al-Andalus, she can be educated and have a life of responsibilities outside the confines of her family home. Here women can be doctors or lawyers or managers of great libraries. She travels for her profession, although women don't seem to have the same rights outside of al-Andalus. |
Zilia Degli Giudici (Shadowed Stars Mid-Realm)
Most people just call me Z and I’m very much into feasting and research on cheesecake. I do also enjoy writing and telling
stories too, I struggle with being nervous and my execution isn’t great. I love to sing, but have a really difficult time singing in front of others, even my own wife. Lol I have only been in the SCA for 6 years and I have not yet learned how to speak or write in persona yet. One day, I hope to. I am protegge (Italian for protégé) to Dame Maggie MacKeith. I am apprendista (Italian for apprentice) to Master Fairfax. I also enjoy learning about religions and religious practices as well as cultures. |
Zoya Ivanovna Rezanskaya (Meridies)
I live in the Kingdom of Meridies and have been a recorder player for many years. More recently I
have become interested in expanding into the bardic arts, as I love singing and poetry. I also enjoy brewing beer and mead. |
