We've now filled the class schedule for Bardic Madness South XI.
Barring surprises, this is the class schedule for this year.
Round and Round it Goes | Baroness Catriona | After a brief history of rounds sung in period, there will be class participation learning 8-10 round of period origin, period themes, and SCA filk. New songs have been added for those who have taken this class before. A class handout and a music CD are available: $3 |
Using Your Voice | THL Jose Sao Pacian | How can we sing all night, be heard, and not be hoarse before midnight? A voice class with both a period look and a modern look at voice production and health. |
Introduction to Skaldic Poetry | Master Toki Redbeard | Poetry thrived in the Viking Age and after, and lives on in the Icelandic sagas. This course teaches basic poetics, and offers an appreciation of sometimes-difficult-to-understand poetry that has been called "the high-water mark of style over substance." |
Troubadours, Trouveres, and Jongluers, Oh My! |
Mistress Amelie d'Anjou | Listen to Amelie wax ecstatically (or run at the mouth) about why she likes troubadors so much. Besides the great poetry, there are musical issues, and the problems with performing stuff not in English. We'll address that too, with hopes to inspire you to write your own. Free handout has lots of sources. |
Improv Games | Master John Inchingham | Theatrical improvisation - deigned to help you learn to think on your feet. |
Intermediate Storytelling | Master Toki Redbeard | Tips, tricks, and a little philosophy, all designed to help connect with your audience when you're telling stories. |
Drumming for a Procession | Lady Khatife al-Nameer (Called Khavi bint Rozakii) | Wow your crowd by playing period drum music as you march into court or opening ceremonies at Pennsic. Horns can easily play over these simple marching rhythms from the splendor of Rome to the opulance of the Mehter Bands from the Ottoman Janissary's. Hands-on class, bring a drum (any style that can be carried), wind instrument, or your voice. |
Irish Myth and Legend | THL Brendan O Corraidhe | If you're a fan of things Celtic, you've probably heard the names Finn Mac Cumail, Cuchullain, Maeve, Conor Mac Nessa, Nuada of the Silver Hand, Tuatha de Dannan, Tain bo Culaigne, and so forth. This class will string them all together for you in their proper sequence and arrangement. While we'll cover some supernatural and semi-supernatural figures such as the Morrigan and the Sidhe, this class is not a primer on Celtic gods and goddesses. Rather, it focuses on the intersection of Irish history with Irish hero-tales. No class limit. Includes handout with no fee. |
