Shield-Vow, Shield-Oath

Wyndreth Berginsdottir

For Northshield and the brothers and sisters of my heart's blood, everywhere you are. This is who we are.

skjǫldr = 'shield' (Old Norse)
vár = 'woman' (poetic); 'truth;' 'solemn vow, oath;' 'spring (season)' (Old Norse)

When the water rises
When the sun is cruel
When the ice lies heavy
When the long night beckons you

We will always stand together, even when we're far away
For we are ever kinsmen, and our hearts will find the way.

Call to me in the darkness
call to me at brightest noon
Call to me at this day's closing
underneath the gallows-moon

Call to me amid the thunder
Call to me in slashing rain
Call to me when driven to your knees
beneath some crushing pain

Call to me when you are weeping
Call to me when you are tired
Call to me when you are smiling
Or in the shadow of the pyre

I will answer you in silence
I will answer you in song
I will answer with my vengeance
and my strength when you are wronged

I will answer you with shelter
I will offer you my hand
I will kindle for you fire
to guide you back to land

I will answer you in laughter
I will answer you with tears
I will answer you unflinching
I will answer you for years

And we will stand together, even when we're far apart
For you and I are kinsmen; you are ever in my heart.
