A & S Arts and Sciences. Includes any craft or trade in period; armoring, dancing, music, costuming, calligraphy, brewing, wood working, and dozens more.
Armored Combat Combat where the weapons are made of rattan.
Authorization The right to participate in a martial activity. Also the process of earning that right.
Authorization Card A card that indicates which martial activities you are allowed to participate in.
Autocrat The person in charge of running an event. The '-crat' suffix gets added to all sorts of words to identify the person running that activity.
Award A "cookie" given out by the Crown to someone. It's a way of saying thank you for contributing and doing nice stuff.
Bard A person who is known for singing songs or telling stories.
Bardic Circle An informal gathering for singing and storytelling. Anyone who attends is welcome to either perform or just sit and listen.
Barony A local group (larger than a shire and has a Baron and/or Baroness)
Calontir Kingdom directly west of the Mid-Realm. Former principality of the Mid-Realm.
Chatelaine Person who helps newcomers get started.
Chirurgeon Person who can help administer basic first aid.
Chronicler Person who puts together the local newsletter.
Court Gathering before the Crown (or it's representative) for royal announcements and awards.
College A local group (usually centered around a mundane college or university).
Crash Space Informal lodging for the night, usually with a member of the group holding an event. Many members will be happy to make floor space available for out-of-town visitors.
The Crown The King and Queen.
Crown Tourney How the next King and Queen are decided.
Damp Site Alcoholic beverages are permitted at the event site.
Device A set of heraldry that uniquely identifies a person or group.
Discretely Damp Site Alcoholic beverages are permitted, but must generally be kept out of sight. Any empties need to be removed from the site. These sites are normally dry, but their owners have been kind enough to grant us permission so long as we're discreet. Please honor their request.
Dry Site No alcoholic beverages are permitted at the event site.
Ealdormere Kingdom consisting of most of Ontario. Former principality of the Mid-Realm.
The East 2nd oldest kingdom in the SCA. Traditional opponent to the Mid-Realm during Pennsic War.
Event A society gathering. Generally this means something that has been listed in the Kingdom newsletter. A wide variety of different activities will occur. NOTE: Fighters must be authorized in order to participate in martial activities at an event.
Exchequer Treasurer.
Fighter Practice Where you learn or improve your combat abilities. You do not have to be an authorized fighter to participate in fighter practice.
Garb Clothing that attempts to be based on the Middle Ages or Renaissance. Required at events, but not at local meetings or practices (nice to have though). This does not need to be especially fancy, especially when you're first starting out. Loaner garb is usually available from your local group or the group hosting an event, but please make arrangements in advance.
Gatekeeper see Troll.
Feast An elaborate meal (usually in the evening) served at an event.
Feast Fee Amount charged by the group for sitting at the feast.
Feast Gear Place setting; at least a plate, cup, spoon, and knife. Can also include a bowl, napkin, fork, tablecloth, candle, etc. Does not need to be fancy, especially if you're just starting. Paper plates and plastic forks are acceptable, but look yucky. Inexpensive alternatives are easily found. Also, most members probably have a spare set or two that can be borrowed. Ask about this ahead of time if you can.
Feastocrat Person in charge of cooking the feast.
Gentle Any person.
Guild see Household.
Heavy Combat see Armored Combat.
Herald Two different kinds: A person with a (hopefully) loud voice who makes announcements. A person with knowledge of heraldry who can help you choose an appropriate name and device.
Hoo-Bah Cheer given to someone after they receive an award in Court.
Household A group of people who enjoy each other's company and like doing things together. Often a household will be focused on some particular aspect of the Society such as armored combat or costuming.
Kingdom A large area of the SCA with its own King, Queen, Prince, and Princess.
Knight A person who's been specially recognized by the Crown for their fighting prowess.
Laurel A person who's been specially recognized by the Crown for abilities in the Arts & Sciences.
Light Combat see Rapier Combat.
Marshal A person who can run combat related activities. Comes in 6 flavors: heavy combat, rapier combat, equestrian, archery, thrown weapons, and youth combat.
Member Someone who sends in their annual membership fee to Milpitas. You do not need to be a member to participate in most activities - it's a good thing to do though. The only things you must have a membership in order to do are 1) Be an authorized fighter. 2) Hold an office. 3) Fight/Be fought for in Crown Tourney. 4) Be a marshall.
Middle Kingdom The area covered mundanely by Ohio, most of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, most of Kentucky, a bit of of Ontario, and a nip of Iowa.
The Midlands The region of the Middle Kingdom that consists of the mundane state of Illinois plus a nip of Iowa.
Mundane Anything modern.
Mundane Name Your real name.
Northshield Kingdom consisting of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Manitoba, part of Michigan, and part of Ontario. Former principality of the Mid-Realm.
Off-Board Attending an event, but not eating the feast.
On-Board Attending an event and eating the feast.
The Pale Middle Kingdom newsletter.
Pelican A person who's been specially recognized by the Crown for their service to the Society.
Period The era of time that the Society uses for it's activities. Generally considered to be anywhere from 600 to 1600.
Port-a-Castle Bathroom, generally a privy at a camping event.
Post-Revel Party after the main event, usually in someone's home. Garb is optional.
Principality A large section of the Kingdom (usually has its' own Prince and Princess).
Proof of Membership Your membership card or newsletter label.
Province A local group (usually the first group formed in a Kingdom).
Pursuivant see Herald.
Rapier Combat Combat where the weapons are a schlager blade, del tin (two kinds of rapier) or fencing dagger.
Region An area of the Kingdom (roughly equivalent to a state).
Ringmail The regional newsletter for the Midlands. Distributed through your local Seneschal, free of charge. Also, a kind of armor (alternatively called Chainmail or, for those geeky enough to know the reference, Armor Class 5 (2nd ed :-).
SCA Name The name call yourself within the Society.
Seneschal Local chapter president.
Shire A local group.
Signet Person who helps coordinate getting award scrolls made.
Site Place where an event is being held.
Site Fee The entrance fee for an event.
Smalls Children (also period word for underclothing).
Steward see Autocrat.
The Tannists The Prince and Princess of a Kindom.
Troll Person collecting money for an event.
Troll Booth Where your site and/or feast fee is paid.
Uber Card see Authorization Card.
Warrant A writ from the Kingdom bureaucracy that allows you to hold an office within the Kingdom.
